Abstract
Students sometimes find it challenging to develop listening skills in English. Listening is one of the first skills to be learned compared to other skills. Learning media is a crucial support in teaching, as it provides interactive and engaging materials to facilitate comprehension. Digital media, such as YouTube, has become increasingly popular in language learning, offering many authentic resources. Media in the form of conversation videos, particularly dialogues, provides students with a fun and immersive learning experience. This study aims to discover the contribution of conversation videos from YouTube to students’ listening skills and how teachers implement them in the classroom. To achieve this goal, the researcher used case study as a qualitative approach. The instruments used were observation and interviews related to students’ perspectives. The participants in this study were six students in class 9B in one of the Islamic junior high schools in MTs AT-Taqwa Bandung district. The data analysis followed Creswell’s (2012) procedure. Based on the analysis’s results, video conversations contribute to cognitive and active listening engagement and increase students’ motivation and interest in learning to listen. Students’ experience increased understanding because video conversations relate to real life and self-directed learning because of accessibility. Teachers can integrate video conversations in the listening-learning process, such as pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening. Despite having problems with unfamiliar vocabulary, students can understand the situation of the video and are motivated to learn independently, thus making it interesting to learn to listen.
