Abstract
This study examines the use of positive politeness strategies in The Last Airbender (2024 TV series) through the character Aang, focusing on his interactions in Episodes 1 and 2. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis, this research analyzes Aang’s utterances to identify how Aang’s uses of positive politeness reflect his goal of uniting people and maintaining harmony and and the factors influencing his choices in The Last Airbender (2024) TV Series. The findings of this study reveal that Aang employs 13 out of 15 (87%) positive politeness strategies with a total of 68 instances identified in Brown and Levinson’s framework within episodes 1 and 2 of The Last Airbender (2024) TV Series. This high percentage indicates that Aang consistently relies on positive politeness as a key strategy in his interactions. Through these strategies, he successfully builds connections, fosters trust, and maintains harmony among the characters. His frequent use of positive politeness reflects his role as a unifier, reinforcing his commitment to bringing people together despite cultural and elemental differences. The most frequently used strategies include Give Gifts to H (15 Instances) and Seek Agreement (9 instances), these strategies reflect his efforts to foster goodwill, maintain harmony, and encourage cooperation. Two strategies were absence: Assume or Assert Reciprocity and Promise/Offer. Aang avoids reciprocity-based interactions as his generous personality aligns with the Air Nomad philosophy, prioritizing selfless assistance. Additionally, he avoids making clear promises or offers because of his independent nature and the heavy responsibility he carries as the Avatar. The absence of these strategies reflects his humble leadership, flexibility, and sincerity in social interactions. The study also finds that Aang’s politeness strategies are primarily influenced by the Payoffs factor for 40 Instances (59%), while the Circumstances: Sociological Variables factor accounts for 28 instances(41%). The dominance of the Payoffs factor suggests that Aang strategically uses politeness to strengthen relationships and achieve his goal of unity among the four elements. This research highlights the role of politeness strategies in character interactions and contributes to the broader understanding of politeness in fictional discourse. Future research could expand on this study by analyzing all politeness strategies outlined by Brown and Levinson (1987) or exploring politeness within multicultural and multilingual contexts. Integrating sociolinguistic perspectives could further enrich the analysis of politeness strategies in media and real-life interactions.
