Abstract

In the context of daily communication, the employment of discourse deixis facilitates the seamless progression of discourse, obviating the necessity for reiteration of information that has been previously mentioned or is scheduled for subsequent discussion. Discourse deixis also plays an important role in regulating the relationship between the speaker, the listener, and the topic under discussion. The present study aims to analyse the use of discourse deixis in podcast conversations, focusing on the types and functions of deixis in connecting the elements of discourse. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilising a content analysis data collection method of conversation transcripts. The analysis is conducted based on the theories of discourse deixis proposed by Levinson (1983) and Yule (1996). The analysis revealed that 223 utterances contained discourse deixis expressions, In this research, the data to be analysed are 75 data. Including 138 reference data. The dominant word 'but' was found in podcast conversation, constituting 79 data. Further analysis reveals that the word ‘but’ is the most reference types that commonly found and analysed in podcast conversations, with a total of 23 instances. The analysis also identified demonstrative pronouns, which accounted for 85 data, and the word 'this', which was the most prevalent in the podcast conversation, accounting for 40 data and analysed for 8 data. Moreover, an analysis of the data collected revealed the presence of 22 instances of anaphora function and 53 instances of cataphora function in the discourse on Daebak Show, a podcast hosted on the YouTube channel of Dive Studio. In conclusion, the study's findings indicate that the employment of discourse deixis in podcast conversations serves to elucidate viewpoints, thereby fostering a stronger connection between the speaker and the listener. This phenomenon is concomitant with the maintenance of fluid communication.
