Abstract

This article explores the commodification of religion, a topic that has been widely studied by scholars, most of whom view it in a predominantly negative light. The commodification of religion is often seen as shifting its role from a sacred institution to a mere commercial product driven by material profit. However, this perspective tends to overlook the functional aspects of religious commodification. By examining the commodification of religion as seen in the case of religious sermons by Hanan Attaki, we critically reassess this negative thesis. Rather than diminishing religion, commodification can make it more engaging, extend its reach to a broader audience, enhance its practicality, and adapt it to the social values of contemporary generations. In this sense, the commodification of religion in sermons does not undermine its essence but instead provides a functional dimension, allowing religion to remain relevant amid societal change.
