Abstract

This study aims to deeply analyze the conveyance of the theme of absurdism in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go and its Indonesian translation titled Jangan Lepaskan Aku, translated by Gita Yuliani K. The analysis focuses on the use of domestication and foreignization strategies in the translation process. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, this study explores how absurdism as a theme that reflects humanity’s existential conflict with an irrational world, is constructed through plot development, as well as how translation strategies affect the understanding of this theme in cross-cultural readers. The results show that the domestication strategy is used to simplify the cultural elements and idioms in the source text so that they are more suitable for the cultural context of Indonesian readers. This strategy makes it easier for readers to understand the narrative without losing emotional connection to the characters and story. On the other hand, the foreignization strategy is used to retain the philosophical nuances, cultural terms, and original values of the source text, providing a reading experience that remains authentic and thought-provoking. The combination of these two strategies shows that translation does not only aim to transfer language, but also to bridge cross-cultural and philosophical understanding.
