Abstract

Promises and threats are forms of speech acts commonly used to express a speaker’s commitment to the listener. This commitment is often conveyed as a response to the actions taken by the listener. Interestingly, in the Qur’an, promises and threats frequently appear to accompany the law verses delivered by Allah to the readers. These utterances demonstrate Allah’s commitment to give a response to those who obey and violate His laws. Based on the research background, the present study aims to analyze the use of promise and threat speech acts in the law verses of Surah Al-Baqarah as translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali and to determine the contextual meaning behind them. This study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Additionally, it adopted a pragmatic framework based on the speech act theories proposed by Searle and Yule. The findings revealed that promises and threats were used in different law verse contexts. Promises often accompany command verses, functioning as motivational tools to encourage readers to fulfil divine instructions. In contrast, threats frequently appeared alongside prohibitive verses, serving as warnings to encourage readers to avoid disobedience. Furthermore, the acts of promising and threatening in those law verses were realised through conditional sentence patterns, which include conditional promises and conditional threats. This sentence pattern is used to influence behaviour and raise awareness in readers that every action carries punishments or rewards from Allah in the future, as stated in the Qur’an. Lastly, this study uncovered the contextual meanings of promises and threats in the law verses Surah Al-Baqarah, including as representations of divine justice, consequences of human actions, and guidance for the lives of Muslims.
