Abstract

Infectious disease is the leading cause of death in the world, especially in the tropics, such as Indonesia. One cause of the disease is a bacterial infection. Treatment of diseases caused by bacterial infections using synthetic drugs cause a lot of harm to the body, so it requires the natural remedies that have a high potential as a natural antibiotic that has no harmful effects on the body. One of the plants is widely used for the treatment of betel plant (Piper betle Linn.). This study aimed to determine the effect of antibacterial activity at concentrations of extract of betel leaf (Piper betle Linn.) In inhibiting the growth of bacteria P. aeruginosa. The research was conducted in March-April 2012 in the Laboratory of Integrated Chemistry and Microbiology Laboratories Stone Mountain Health Polytechnic Bandung. This study is an experimental research laboratory with various concentrations of 1%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and used distilled water as a control and tetracycline as a comparison. The treatment was repeated 3 times replications. The extract used is betel leaf (Piper betle Linn.). Parameters observed in this study is the percentage of inhibition of growth and inhibition zone P.aeruginosa bacteria on MHA media (Muller Hinton order) were treated with each extract of betel leaf (Piper betle Linn.). Measuring the diameter or bacterial growth inhibition zone using the ruler, and calculating the percentage of inhibition of bacteria using the formula: (ba) / a × 100%, where a is the initial diameter, and b is the diameter of the end. The data were analyzed by the method of ANOVA (Analysis Of Variance) using SPSS software proved significantly different followed by Duncan test. The results of the study showed that the betel leaf extract gives border barriers with an average diameter of 2.3 mm at a concentration of extract 1%, the average diameter of 3.3 mm at a concentration of extract 2%, the average diameter of 4.3 mm at concentration of 4%, an average diameter of 5.6 mm at a concentration of 6%, the average diameter of 7.3 mm at a concentration of 8%, the average diameter of 9 mm at a concentration of 10%. And the average diameter of 14.3 mm at a concentration of 5% tetracycline as a comparison. Results also showed that the betel leaf extract has a minimum inhibitory concentration at a concentration of 1% and an average diameter of inhibitory highest concentration of 10% to inhibit the growth of bacteria P.aeruginosa. Considered as a whole that the betel leaf extract has the effect of the inhibition of the growth of bacteria P.aeruginosa. The greater the concentration of betel leaf extract, the greater the power the inhibition.
