Abstract
Instagram has become one of the fastest-growing social media platforms and has been influential in shaping digital communication patterns. It is reflected through the emergence of a variety of language use in the comments column, which is also influenced by the used of slang. Therefore, this study aims to determine the types, meanings, and functions of slang used by Instagram users in SZA's Instagram account. This research was grounded in the primary theories of Chapman (1988), Leech (1974), and Allan & Burridge (2006). To analyze the data, this research used a descriptive qualitative method. Based on the data analysis, the findings showed that there were types of slang, namely primary slang (25 data) and secondary slang (37 data). Moreover, for the meaning based on Leech theory (1974), there were affective meaning (39 data), connotative meaning (12 data), social meaning (7 data), conceptual meaning (4 data), reflected meaning (0 data), collocative meaning (0 data), and thematic meaning (0 data). Meanwhile, for the functions of slang words, there were: to express impresstion (45 data), to show intimacy (7 data), to form intimate atmosphere (3 data), to reveal anger (3 data), To initiate relax conversation (2 data), to humiliate (2 data), and to address (0 data). From the data analysis, it could be concluded that secondary slang was the most widely used type of slang by Instagram users on SZA’s account, showing a preference for more complex and contextual slang. In terms of meaning, affective meaning was the most common. It indicated that its primary function was to convey the feelings and emotions expressed by the speakers. Meanwhile, the most prominent function of slang was to express impression, indicating its strong role in communicating the emotions, judgments, and spontaneous reactions of the speakers.
