Abstract
ENGLISH: The phenomenon of intensive TikTok use among adolescents is associated with increased psychological pressures, such as stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem. These pressures are not only triggered by unrealistic beauty standards and excessive social comparison but also by concerns about receiving negative comments from others. Such conditions drive adolescents to present an idealized self-image on social media in order to gain acceptance and recognition from their social environment. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to examine the influence of body image and neuroticism on self-presentation among high school students who are active TikTok users. This research employs a quantitative approach with a causal design, purposive sampling technique, and multiple regression analysis. The instruments used include the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scale (MBSRQ-AS) to measure body image, the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO-PI-R) to assess the neuroticism trait, and the Self-Presentation on Facebook Questionnaire (SPFBQ), adapted to the TikTok context, to measure self-presentation. The participants consisted of 275 students from SMA Negeri 2 Subang who actively use TikTok and have uploaded photos or videos featuring themselves. The results of the analysis indicate that body image (p = 0.005) and neuroticism (p < 0.001) have a significant partial effect on self-presentation. Furthermore, both variables simultaneously have a significant effect on self-presentation (p < 0.001), with neuroticism contributing more (8.7%) compared to body image (2%). These findings emphasize that body image and neuroticism are key psychological factors influencing adolescents’ self-presentation on social media, with neuroticism being the more dominant factor, particularly due to adolescents’ sensitivity to social evaluation and anxiety about negative comments in the digital environment.
