Abstract
In communication process, people not only used verbal communication but also non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication is human habitual in communicating process to emphasize the meaning of every utterances in a conversation. Non-verbal communication also often found in novel, especially in Twilight novel, which is expressed by means of act description. Thus, this study attempts to find how this communication appear in the novel which is broken down into the two research questions: (1) what kinds of non-verbal communication in Stephenie Meyer’s novel Twilight, and (2) what functions of non-verbal communication in verbal communication in Stephenie Meyer’s novel Twilight. Descriptive-qualitative was applied as a research methodology in this research. The data were taken from Twilight’s novel by Stephenie Meyer published in 2005. In order to solve those problems, the researcher used two main theories; Wardhaugh (1977) and DeVito theory (2002). Wardhaugh explains about kinds of non-verbal communication which is divided into four categories; kinesics, paralanguage, artifact, and proxemics. While, DeVito explains about functions from each category; as emphasizing, substituting, complementing, repeating, regulating, and contradicting. The findings show that non-verbal communication in novel mostly used kinesics category as emphasize the meaning of every utterances in verbal communication such as waving, raise hand, shaking hands, shaking head, nodding, and facial expression than other categories. Meanwhile, mostly complement often used in verbal communication in novel than other functions. In conclusion, non-verbal communications have various categories for emphasizing verbal communication. Researcher find out three categories are kinesics, paralanguage, and artifact. Beside was founded functions from each categories are emphasizing, repeating, complementing, and substituting.
