Abstract

This study was motivated by Joe Biden’s Instagram post about “Transgender Day of Visibility” amid the Israel-Palestine conflict and Easter Day, which triggered adverse reactions from citizens through impolite comments. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impoliteness strategies and function of impoliteness found in the comments section of Joe Biden’s post about “Transgender Day of Visibility.” Impoliteness strategies are typically used to humiliate others during conversations and attack someone’s dignity. This study is based on the theory of impoliteness strategies proposed by Culpeper (1996) and the theory of the function of impoliteness developed by Culpeper (2011). This study employs qualitative methods and a pragmatic approach to examine impolite utterances by citizens in comment sections, taking into account their context. Based on the results of this study, out of 100 data points collected, 63 impoliteness strategies were identified, with 4 data points having more than one strategy. It was found that negative impoliteness was the most dominant with 27 data points, followed by bald on record with 18 data points, sarcasm or mock politeness with 15 data points, and positive impoliteness with only 3 data points. Withhold politeness was not found in this study. In terms of function, coercive impoliteness reached 30, followed by affective impoliteness with 28, and entertaining impoliteness with only 8.
