Abstract

This research, titled "The Concept and Practice of Environmental Conservation from the Perspective of Sunda Wiwitan in the Cireundeu Indigenous Village," is grounded in the increasing environmental problems, particularly those caused by development activities that disregard ecological carrying capacity. One of the most significant events indicating this ecological crisis was the landslide at the Leuwigajah Final Waste Disposal Site (TPA) in Cimahi City on February 21, 2005, which claimed hundreds of lives and damaged the surrounding ecosystem. This tragedy reflects the weakness of environmental governance and highlights the importance of community involvement in maintaining ecological balance sustainably. This study aims to examine the concept and practices of environmental conservation rooted in the Sunda Wiwitan belief system, as upheld by the Cireundeu Indigenous Community. The focus lies in understanding local values that shape ecological behavior and how these principles guide their harmonious relationship with nature. The research employs a qualitative method with an anthropological approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in depth interviews, and documentation of traditional practices related to environmental stewardship. The data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively to explore the community's worldview, values, and practices within an ecological context.Theoretically, this research refers to Paul Sillitoe’s concept of indigenous knowledge, which emphasizes the role of traditional ecological knowledge as a vital resource in sustainable environmental management. This framework helps to interpret the practices of the indigenous community as a living and adaptive knowledge system in the face of ecological challenges. The findings reveal that the people of Cireundeu perceive the environment as part of a cosmic system that must be preserved both physically and spiritually. Values such as Tri Tangtu di Bumi, Pikukuh Tilu, and the principles of silih asih, silih asah, and silih asuh serve as foundational guides for maintaining balance between humans and nature. These are realized through the preservation of sacred forests, cassava farming, and rituals such as Ngaruwat Cai and Tutup Taun. This local knowledge contributes significantly to sustainable environmental preservation.
