Abstract

The low level of student engagement and scientific performance in chemistry learning necessitates an instructional approach that integrates contextual and practical aspects. This study aims to enhance student scientific performance through the implementation of project-based learning activities in the production of red rice kefir face toner (Oryza nivara) and to analyze the characteristics of the resulting face toner product. The research method used was pre-experimental with a One-Shot Case Study design, involving three groups of Grade XI of industrial pharmacy students. The research instruments consisted of activity observation sheets, project-based LKPD, scientific performance assessment sheets, and product characteristic assessment sheets. The determination of antioxidant potential was conducted using the DPPH method. The research results showed an increase in student activity in completing the project-based LKPD with an average score of 95, as well as significant development in scientific performance, with an average score of 93.75 (both in the “very good” category), including students' ability to design experiments, conduct experiments, collect data, and communicate. The analysis of the product characteristics yielded an average score of 98.8 (excellent category), and an IC50 value of 73.13 ppm, indicating that this face toner product has sufficiently strong antioxidant activity. These findings suggest that the implementation of project-based LKPD can enhance student engagement and scientific performance while producing innovative products needed by the industrial pharmacy department.
