Abstract
ENGLISH: This study examines the use of semiotic symbols in the Japanese anime "The Seven Deadly Sins" (Nanatsu no Taizai), using Charles Sanders Peirce's three-element semiotic theory: Representamen, Object, and Interpretant. The primary objective of this study is to determine how the anime's visual and narrative elements convey meaning and moral, philosophical, and cultural values related to the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, anger, and sloth. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study analyzes several scenes, character appearances, symbols, dialogue, and visual elements representing each sin. Data were collected through in-depth observation of the first and second seasons of the anime, supported by visual documentation, scripts, and literature related to Christian theology, symbol interpretation, and anime cultural studies. Each sin is depicted through a main character whose traits and background correspond to the sin's meaning, as demonstrated through color, clothing, special powers, and plot development. The analysis shows that this anime utilizes a fairly complex system of symbols with deeper meanings than just their appearance. In this case, the representamen is a visual or textual sign such as a tattoo, clothing, or magical power that represents each sin. The object is the true meaning of the sin based on history and religious teachings. Meanwhile, the interpretant is the understanding or meaning that emerges in the minds of the audience, depending on their cultural and personal backgrounds. For example, the character Meliodas, who represents the sin of anger, is depicted as calm but can explode at any time, allowing the audience to interpret its meaning differently than usual.
