Abstract

INDONESIA: Characters are the essence of fiction. These entities possess identities, personal histories, and interpersonal connections akin to those of human beings in the physical world. Characters engage in discourse to communicate with one another. In addition, the characters exhibit emotional responses, including preferences, aversions, sorrow, rage, and unease, which they express through their words or actions, mirroring the behavior of individuals in reality. Anxiety is a psychological state that arises in reaction to a distressing circumstance and has the ability to pose a threat. In order to understand and study human anxiety in real life, one must not only see it directly, but also analyze its portrayal in literary works. Fictional characters also exhibit many characterizations and attitudes that are associated with psychic and psychological experiences, similar to those found in real life. The study identified two issues pertaining to anxiousness in fictional characters. 1. What are the specific manifestations of anxiety displayed by Kenny in the Black Mirror episode "Shut Up and Dance" directed by James Watkins? How does Kenny's nervousness in James Watkins' Black Mirror episode "Shut Up and Dance" impact the audience's perception of his behavior? This study employs character theory as proposed by Andrew Bennet and Nicholas Royle, psychoanalysis as developed by Sigmund Freud, anxiety as conceptualized by Richard P. Halgin and Susan Krauss Whitbourne, and the theory of planned behavior as defined by Icek Ajzen. The researcher use Abrams' (1999) literary criticism methodology to systematically assess the data. The study findings indicate that Winston encountered various forms of anxiety, which in turn influenced Kenny's conduct. INDONESIA: Tokoh adalah inti dari karya fiksi. Tokoh-tokoh ini memiliki identitas, latar belakang pribadi, serta hubungan antarpribadi yang serupa dengan manusia di dunia nyata. Tokoh-tokoh tersebut berinteraksi melalui dialog untuk saling berkomunikasi. Selain itu, para tokoh menampilkan respons emosional seperti rasa suka, tidak suka, kesedihan, kemarahan, dan kecemasan yang mereka tunjukkan melalui ucapan maupun tindakan mereka—mencerminkan perilaku manusia dalam kehidupan nyata. Kecemasan merupakan keadaan psikologis yang muncul sebagai reaksi terhadap situasi yang menegangkan dan berpotensi menimbulkan ancaman. Untuk memahami dan mempelajari kecemasan manusia dalam kehidupan nyata, seseorang tidak hanya perlu mengamatinya secara langsung, tetapi juga menganalisis penggambaran kecemasan tersebut dalam karya sastra. Tokoh-tokoh fiksi juga menunjukkan berbagai karakterisasi dan sikap yang berkaitan dengan pengalaman psikis dan psikologis, sebagaimana halnya manusia dalam kehidupan nyata. Penelitian ini mengidentifikasi dua permasalahan terkait kecemasan pada tokoh fiksi:1. Bagaimana bentuk-bentuk kecemasan yang ditampilkan oleh Kenny dalam episode Black Mirror: Shut Up and Dance yang disutradarai oleh James Watkins? Bagaimana kecemasan yang dialami Kenny dalam episode tersebut memengaruhi persepsi penonton terhadap perilakunya? Penelitian ini menggunakan teori tokoh yang dikemukakan oleh Andrew Bennet dan Nicholas Royle, teori psikoanalisis oleh Sigmund Freud, konsep kecemasan menurut Richard P. Halgin dan Susan Krauss Whitbourne, serta teori perilaku terencana dari Icek Ajzen. Peneliti menggunakan metode kritik sastra dari Abrams (1999) untuk menganalisis data secara sistematis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Kenny mengalami berbagai bentuk kecemasan yang pada akhirnya memengaruhi perilakunya.
