Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of English borrowing words and to analyze the social situations in which these words are used in a Korean language Webtoon True Beauty. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method to explain the phenomenon of English borrowing words found in the Webtoon True Beauty. The data were collected from dialogues in several selected chapters and were analyzed by using Haugen (1950) to classify the types of borrowing words and Hymes (1974) to describe the social contexts. The analysis also explores how the characters’ interactions reflect their use of English borrowings to express identity, intimacy, and social status. The findings reveal that a total of forty-one English borrowing words were identified, consisting of thirty-three loanwords, seven loanblends, and one loanshift. Among all categories of social situations, informal situations are the most dominant one, especially in conversations among friends. This indicates that English borrowing words are often used to create a friendly, modern, and expressive tone in communication. Overall, the study shows that English has significantly influenced the Korean language through daily expressions used in digital media, particularly in Webtoon culture.
