Abstract
This study aims to analyze the compliment expressing categories used by Seventeen fans on the Seventeen Weverse and the communicative event of the compliments using Yuan’s (2002) theory and Hymes’ (1974) SPEAKING theory. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling. The data source comes from the fans’ comments on the three different Weverse posts, with a total of 50 data points analyzed. The results showed 37 comments were identified as explicit compliments, which six explicit compliments contained bound semantic formulas: two comments of explanation, one contrast, two information questions, and one comment of future reference. In contrast, implicit compliments, which appeared in 13 comments, were found to be unbound without any accompanying elements. The study also utilized the SPEAKING model to gain a detailed understanding of the communicative event of the interaction. The data revealed that the majority of comments came from Chinese fans, with a total of 11 comments, and then Indonesian fans with a total of 7 comments. Indonesian fans exhibit the most responsiveness, consistently utilizing the most playful and intimate key. In contrast, fans from Philippines, South Korea, India, and China tended to maintain ends primarily focused on visual, effort, or more analytical and hyperbolic key. The compliments delivered by Seventeen fans in this research highlight how they use language as a tool to build community and show deep support through unique digital interactions. Based on the findings of this research, several areas can be explored in future research to enrich the understanding of online interaction between fans and idols. Future research could compare compliment expressing categories across various social media platforms to see if they differ based on the platform’s characteristics.
