Abstract

Skripsi ini berjudul Identifying flat and round characters as a way to find the method of characterization in Nathaniel's The Scarlet Letter novel. Sumber data diambil dari novel The Scarlet Letter karya Nathaniel Hawthorne diterbitkan oleh Ticknor, Reed & Fields pada tahun 1980. Analisis ini ditujukan untuk mengetahui karakterisasi tokoh, ditinjau dari karakter datar dan karakter bulat, kemudian ditentukan metode karakterisasinya. Skripsi ini diarahkan untuk menjawab dua pertanyaan dasar tentang karakterisasi tokoh utama, diantaranya 1. Bagaimana mengidentifikasi karakter datar dan bulat untuk menggambarkan karakterisasi. 2. Bagaimana penulis menjelaskan metode karakterisasi langsung dan tidak langsung dalam novel The Scarlet Letter. Teori yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini diambil dari buku berjudul Aspect Of Novel oleh E.M. Forster (1927). Teorinya tentang karakter datar dan karakter bulat untuk menganalisis sumber data. Peneliti  juga menerapkan teori lain yaitu teori karakterisasi yang diperkenalkan oleh Pickering and Hoeper (1981). diambil dari buku Metode Karakterisasi Telaah Fiksi oleh Albertine Minderop, (2005). Teori tersebut dianggap relevan dengan topik diskusi dalam skripsi ini. Ada beberapa langkah yang dilakukan dalam mengumpulkan data setelah menguasai teori. Metode yang peneliti gunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah penelitian kepustakaan. Ketika data dikumpulkan dan diidentifikasi, data tersebut ditulis ulang dan diklasifikasikan menurut jenisnya. Akhirnya, data dianalisis secara deskriptif dengan menggunakan teori karakterisasi. Diakhir penelitian, membiacarakan kesimpulan dan saran digambarkan berdasarkan pada bab penelitian. Hasil dari analisis itu berupa; 1) dari keseluruhan data yang diidentifikasi, round karakter lebih mendominasi karakterisasi karakter dalam isi cerita ini. 2) Temuan selanjutnya adalah Hawtorne lebih sering menggunakan metode tidak langsung untuk karakterisasi tokohnya, metode tersebut memiliki beberapa teknik yang berfungsi untuk memperkuat penggambaran tokoh utama. Penelitian karakterisasi ini masih memiliki cara lain untuk dipelajari misalnya karakterisasi dengan teknik expository, teknik diskursif, dramatik dan kontekstual. Teknik atau metode yang disebutkan tidak digunakan dalam penelitian ini, oleh karena itu peneliti merekomendasikan agar pembaca tertarik untuk membahas karakterisasi tokoh dalam karya sastra terutama novel, dapat menggunakan metode yang telah disebutkan. This paper entitled Identifying flat and round characters as a way to find the method of characterization in Nathaniel's The Scarlet Letter novel. The data of this paper were taken from novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne published by Ticknor, Reed & Fields in 1980. This analysis was mainly aimed at finding out characterizaton characters, viewed from flat and round characters, then determined the method of characterization.  This paper was directed to answer two basic questions about characterizaton of the characters, They were  1. How to identifying flat and round characters to describe the characterization. 2. How does the author explain the direct and indirect characterization methods in The Scarlet Letter novel.  The theory used in this paper was taken from the book entitled Aspect Of Novel oleh E.M. Forster (1927).  His theory about flat and round characters was used to analyze the data source. Researcher also applied the other theories that are characterization theory which was introduced Pickering and Hoeper (1981). taken from the book entitled  Metode Karakterisasi Telaah Fiksi by Albertine Minderop, (2005). The theory is considered relevant to the topic of discussion in this paper. There were some steps done in collecting data after mastering the theories. he method that I used in collecting the data was library research. When the data were collected and identified, the data were rewritten and they were classified according to their types. Finally, the data were analyzed descriptively using the theory of Characterization. At the end of the study, discussing conclusions and suggestions is illustrated based on the research chapter. The results of the analysis are; 1) of the total data identified, the round character more dominates the characterization of characters in the contents of this story. 2) The next finding is that Hawtorne more often uses the indirect method for characterization, the method has several techniques that serve to reinforce the main character portrayal. Research on this characterization still has other ways to be studied for example, characterization with the technique of Expository and dramatic techniques, discursive techniques, dramatic and contextual. The techniques or methods mentioned are not used in this study, therefore the researcher recommends that readers interested in discussing the characterization of characters in the literary richness especially novels, may use the methods already mentioned.
