Abstract

The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell is a non-fiction prose that tells about the effects of racial discrimination in the 90s that occurred in America. The famous Rodney King riot occurred between a black man and four white policemen caused the racial tension in America. It has the negative impact on society, including toward the teenagers. Class 203 at Wilson Senior High School in Long Beach was one of the places where children applied racist behavior to different ethnic groups. They were hostile to each other and mock other people's bodies that were different from them. Gruwell as a teacher in the class was aware of the racism among her students, so she tried to overcome it in various ways. This research aims to find out the portrayal of racial discriminations, to find out the factors of the racial discriminations occurrence, and to find out the solutions offered by Erin Gruwell to overcome the racial discriminations in The Freedom Writers Diary. To investigate the problems, the researcher used postcolonial theory with a mimetic approach from Abrams to dissect the racial discrimination problem in the non-fiction prose. The method used in this research was qualitative method. This method was used to identify racial discrimination in The Freedom Writers Diary. Meanwhile, in analyzing the data, the researcher used postcolonial theory to reveal the problems. From the results of this study, researchers concluded that racial discrimination portrayed brutality, chaos and bullying. It was occurred among teenagers of various forms, from mocking of body, mocking other ethnic and the violence of physical. The factors of those discriminations were the Rodney King riots and other reasons. Meanwhile, Erin Gruwell as a teacher used literature as a learning tool such made the movie or read the novel which have the relation between the characters in the novel and the circumstances experienced by her students, invited the guest speakers, field trip to various places and wrote as a means of conveying their problems which are reflected by all students in the diary. The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell adalah sebuah prosa non-fiksi yang menceritakan efek diskriminasi ras yang terjadi pada tahun 90-an di Amerika. Kericuhan Rodney King yang terkenal antara satu orang kulit hitam dan empat polisi kulit putih menimbulkan ketegangan ras di Amerika. Hal tersebut membawa dampak yang negatif kepada masyarakat, termasuk para remaja. Kelas 203 di Sekolah Menengah Atas Wilson yang berada di Long Beach adalah salah satu tempat dimana anak-anak sekolah menerapkan perilaku rasis terhadap kelompok etnis yang berbeda. Gruwell sebagai pengajar di kelas tersebut menyadari adanya rasisme diantara para muridnya, sehingga dia berusaha mengatasi hal tersebut dengan berbagai macam cara. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk menemukan gambaran diskriminasi rasial, untuk menemukan faktor-faktor terjadinya diskriminasi rasial, dan untuk menemukan solusi-solusi yang ditawarkan oleh Erin Gruwell untuk mengatasi diskriminasi rasial pada The Freedom Writers Diary. Untuk meneliti permasalahan tersebut, peneliti menggunakan teori poskolonial dengan pendekatan mimetik dari Abrams untuk membedah permasalahan diskriminasi rasial yang ada di dalam prosa non-fiksi tersebut. Metode yang digunakan di dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif. Metode ini digunakan untuk mengetahui diskriminasi rasial yang ada pada The Freedom Writers Diary. Sedangkan, di dalam penganalisisan data, peneliti menggunakan teori poskolonial untuk membedah permasalahan-permasalahan yang ada. Dari hasil penelitian ini, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa diskriminasi ras tergambarkan dengan brutal, bulian, dan kekacauan. Diskriminasi tersebut terjadi di kalangan remaja bentuknya bermacam-macam, dari mengejek bentuk tubuh, mengejek etnis lain maupun sampai kekerasan fisik. Adapun salah satu penyebab diskriminasi adalah kerusuhan Rodney King. Sedangkan, upaya yang dilakukan Erin Gruwell yang merupakan seorang guru antara lain menggunakan sastra sebagai sarana pembelajaran seperti membuat sebuah film atau membaca buku-buku yang memiliki keterkaitan antara tokoh yang ada di novel dengan keadaan yang dialami oleh murid-muridnya, mengundang pembicara tamu, darmawisata ke berbagai tempat dan menulis sebagai sarana menyampaikan permasalahan mereka yang digambarkan oleh semua siswa di dalam sebuah catatan harian.
