Abstract

This Research was motivated by an interest in the process of identity formation, which continually evolves through life experiences, social environments, and cultural interactions. The movie Everything Everywhere All at Once 2022 as selected as the subject of this Research because id depicts Evelyn’s journey as she navigates family conflicts, cultural pressures, and inner struggles that shape her self understanding. This Research aims to analyze forms of resistance and the process of cultural negotiation in the formation of Evelyn’s identity. It employes a qualitative descriptive method, drawing on data such as dialogue, scenes, character expressions, and visual element within the movie. The analysis is grounded in Homi K. Bhabha’s postcolonial theory, which focuses on the concepts of cultural negotiation and resistance in identity formation and is supported by related theories. The result show that the resistance Evelyn experiences does not manifest as direct rejection but emerges through internal conflict and a shift in her perspective toward herself and her family. Furthermore, cultural negotiation plays a crucial role in the process of Evelyn’s identity formation through her acceptance of the various values present in her life. This Research conludes that resistance and cultural negotiation are interrelated in shaping and ever evolving identity.
