Abstract

ENGLISH: This study examines directive illocutionary acts used by the main character, Beth Harmon, in The Queen's Gambit. Although directive speech acts have been widely discussed in pragmatic studies, their use in portraying character interaction and communicative intentions in this series has received limited attention. Therefore, this research aims to answer two questions: (1) what types of directive illocutionary acts are used by Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit? and (2) how are these directive illocutionary acts used to achieve communicative functions? This study employed a qualitative content analysis method within a constructivist paradigm. The data were collected from the dialogue script of The Queen’s Gambit and analyzed types of directive illocutionary acts and communicative functions. The findings revealed directive illocutionary acts consisting of 18 requests, 4 commands, 6 suggestions, 2 invitations, and 7 prohibitions, with requesting being the most dominant type. These acts functioned as communicative strategies that enabled her to influence the behavior, responses, and decisions of other characters. By using directives, Beth was able to obtain information, seek support and cooperation, guide interactions toward her intended objectives, express authority and control in particular situations, and prevent actions that conflicted with her intentions. INDONESIA: Penelitian ini mengkaji tindak ilokusi direktif yang digunakan oleh tokoh utama, Beth Harmon, dalam The Queen’s Gambit. Meskipun tindak tutur direktif telah banyak dibahas dalam kajian pragmatik, penggunaannya dalam menggambarkan interaksi tokoh dan maksud komunikatif dalam serial ini masih memperoleh perhatian yang terbatas. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjawab dua pertanyaan, yaitu: (1) jenis-jenis tindak ilokusi direktif apa saja yang digunakan oleh Beth Harmon dalam The Queen’s Gambit? dan (2) bagaimana tindak ilokusi direktif tersebut digunakan untuk mencapai fungsi-fungsi komunikatif? Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis isi kualitatif dalam paradigma konstruktivis. Data dikumpulkan dari naskah dialog The Queen’s Gambit dan dianalisis berdasarkan jenis-jenis tindak ilokusi direktif serta fungsi-fungsi komunikatifnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat tindak ilokusi direktif yang terdiri atas 18 permintaan, 4 perintah, 6 saran, 2 ajakan, dan 7 larangan, dengan permintaan sebagai jenis yang paling dominan. Tindak ilokusi tersebut berfungsi sebagai strategi komunikatif yang memungkinkan Beth memengaruhi perilaku, respons, dan keputusan tokoh-tokoh lain. Melalui penggunaan tindak ilokusi direktif, Beth mampu memperoleh informasi, mencari dukungan dan kerja sama, mengarahkan interaksi menuju tujuan yang diinginkannya, menunjukkan otoritas dan kendali dalam situasi tertentu, serta mencegah tindakan yang bertentangan dengan maksudnya.
