Abstract

ENGLISH: This study examines the theme of madness experienced and portrayed by the Joker character in the comic Batman: The Killing Joke (1986) by Alan Moore. Based on Michel Foucault’s theory (1988), this study includes a plot analysis that examines the panels, dialogue, and setting that shape the theme of madness in the Joker character. The comic tells the story of the Joker’s actions as he terrorizes Gotham City and threatens all its citizens. His actions reveal the theme of madness, as well as the Joker’s backstory, which caused him to lose his sanity and commit acts of madness. The purpose of this study is to determine how the plot comprising panels, dialogue, and setting portrays the theme of madness in the Joker character, as well as to examine how the Joker’s past shaped his mad personality. This study also using comic theory by Scott McCloud’s (1994) to explain how plot, panels, dialogue, and setting construct the theme of madness in this comic. The results of this study reveal several themes of madness present in the Joker’s character throughout the story’s plot. In the exposition, rise, climax, the fall, and finally, in the resolution. In addition, researchers also identified the factors that caused the Joker to go mad in the past and discovered that he suffered because of his grief, and pressure from everything around him INDONESIA; Penelitian ini mengkaji tema madness yang dialami dan ditampilkan oleh karakter Joker pada comic Batman : The Killing Joke (1986) by Alan Moore. Berdasarkan teori Michel Foucault (1988) dengan menyertakan analisis dari sisi plot dimana di dalamnya terdapat panel, dialog, dan setting yang membentuk tema madness pada karakter joker. Komik ini bercerita tentang joker yang meneror kota gotham dan memberikan ancaman kepada seluruh warganya. Dalam aksinya, terdapat tema kegilaan serta kisah masa lalu joker yang membuatnya kehilangan akal sehatnya dan melakukan tindakan tindakan madness. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana plot yang berisikan panel, dialog serta setting menampilkan tema kegilaan pada karakter joker, serta mempelajari bagaimana masa lalu karakter joker yang membuatnya membentuk kepribadian mad dalam dirinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode komik dari Scott Mcloud (1994) untuk menjelaskan bagaimana plot, panel, dialog serta setting membentuk tema gila pada komik ini. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan beberapa tema kegilaan yang terjadi pada karakter joker sepanjang plot cerita, Pada eksposisi, rise, climax, fall, dan resolution yang menunjukan tema kegilaan. Selain itu, researcher juga menemukan faktor penyebab joker menjadi gila pada masa lalunya karena kesedihannya, serta tekanan dari segala hal di sekelilingnya.
