Abstract

This research discusses the construction of Eleven’s female subjectivity in Stranger Things Season 4. The study is based on the assumption that Eleven should not only be understood as a female character with supernatural power, but also as a female subject whose identity is shaped through social experience, emotional pressure, trauma, memory, and agency. The main problem of this research lies in how Eleven’s subjectivity is constructed in the narrative, especially when she experiences the loss of power, social rejection, alienation, and the forced return to her traumatic past through Project Nina. Therefore, this research aims to analyze how Eleven’s female subjectivity is constructed in Stranger Things Season 4.This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a feminist criticism approach. The data consist of scenes, dialogues, actions, and visual narratives that represent the process of Eleven’s subject formation. The analysis is conducted by interpreting Eleven’s experiences through the concept of female subjectivity, particularly in relation to identity construction, power relations, traumatic memory, and the ability of a female character to become a conscious and active subject. The findings show that Eleven’s female subjectivity is constructed gradually through experiences of powerlessness, alienation, traumatic memory, self-recognition, and the recovery of agency. At the beginning, Eleven is positioned as a vulnerable character because she loses her power and experiences rejection from her social environment. However, through the confrontation with her past memories, she begins to understand the source of her trauma, fear, and power. This process enables Eleven to no longer be fully controlled by trauma, the laboratory, or other people’s perceptions of her.Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that Eleven’s female subjectivity in Stranger Things Season 4 is constructed as a dynamic process from vulnerability toward self-awareness and agency. Eleven becomes a female subject not because she is free from wounds and trauma, but because she is able to confront, reinterpret, and transform those experiences into the power to define herself. Thus, this research shows that the representation of female characters in popular media can be understood not only through physical strength or extraordinary ability, but also through the subjective process of self-recognition, resistance to domination, and identity construction.
