Abstract

The analysis of this present study focuses on the shift happens in between The Pearl and its translation Mutiara. Therefore, this research problem is formulated into three research questions. There are: 1) what kind of shift happen in translation The Pearl, 2) what is the characteristic of language which affect the shift of translation in translating The Pearl and 3) how do the processes of shift happen in translation The Pearl. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. By using qualitative data and descriptive method, the analysis of this research would be presented in descriptions. Furthermore, in the analysis, the researcher used the Catford’s theory on translation shift, Larson’s theory on analysis the characteristic of language which affect the different form of translation and Nida and Taber theory on translation process. The results of this research are: 1) the kinds of shift happen in translating The Pearl consists of level shift (32 data) and category shift (33 data); 2) the language characteristics affecting the different form of translation are where meaning components are “packaged” differently in one language than in another, the same meaning components will occur in several surface structures lexical items (forms), one form will be used to represents several alternative meanings, and single meaning may be expressed in a variety of forms; and 3) the analysis of process of translation of the sentence contained shift showed that the shift in translation The Pearl happened either in the second stage or third stage of translation process, which are translating or rendering and reconstructing and it is required by the linguistic order in each language and the style and choice of the translator himself considering the several context in SL and TL to make the translation more communicative in TL. Therefore, it also could be inferred that in translating The Pearl, the translator used the communicative translation method.
