Abstract

Slavery is a dark history that once occurred in America around the seventeenth until nineteenth century. This is due to racial discrimination so that a group considers itself superior to other groups. The reason why researcher chooses to discuss slavery is because it is an unforgettable history and as a reminder that all human beings are entitled to equal rights regardless of race, ethnicity, language, religion and other status. The researcher has an interested in Solomon Northup�s 12 Years a Slave because it is a memoir telling the experience about slavery which full of human rights violations The researcher focused on analyzing the life of the slaves and the author's perspective as a former slave in a memoir entitled 12 Years a Slave. Therefore, the discussion of this study takes two problem statements, the first is Solomon Northup's perspective as a slave described in 12 Years a Slave, and Solomon Northup description about the life of the slaves in 12 Years a Slave. The research on the life of the slaves and author's perspective will be linked to Post-colonial theory by Frantz Fanon. The researcher used qualitative descriptive method. The researcher identifies, categories, describes then concludes the data that had been collected. As a result of this research, the life of the slaves based on human rights violations encountered in memoir, the first is the slave trade which is the transaction of sale and purchasing slaves, where the slaves placed in market to be bought by the whites. The second is physical torture which is a physical abuse received by slaves where the whips are common thing to do. The third is the forced labor where the slaves work almost without any time to rest and without pay. The last is a perspective as a viewpoint from the author who experienced slavery.
