Abstract
ENGLISH : 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) is the teen romantic comedy, which is rich American teenage terms. The focus of this research is the presence of translation inconsistencies in the Indonesian subtitles, specifically regarding tone and mood. Drawing upon Nababan et al. (2012) translation quality parameters on consistency and Gottlieb’s (1992) theory on subtitling constraints, this study aims to identify and classify tone using McKee’s (1997) theory and mood using Ulutas & Aytas’s (2024) framework in the original dialogues based on characterization and plot development, examine the consistency of their translation into Indonesian, and analyze the impact of these inconsistencies on the characterization and plot development. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method, focusing on the film 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) as the research object. Data were collected using the documentary study technique and the result of this analysis written in the narrative description. The results reveal 26 data of translation inconsistency. The majority of tone and mood inconsistencies are found within the mocking tone and playful youthful mood category with 4 data entries, while 2 data entries are classified as minor inconsistencies as they only cause slight shifts in meaning. The study concludes this research shows that the inconsistencies of subtitle translation is dominated by the use of word-for-word and deletion techniques, which is influenced by technical subtitling constraints and occur to a lack in-depth research and suboptimal exploration of the target language culture. This has significant impact on the shift in the original tone and mood of the films. INDONESIA : 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) adalah film komedi romantis remaja yang kaya akan istilah-istilah khas remaja Amerika. Fokus penelitian ini adalah adanya ketidakkonsistenan penerjemahan dalam takarir bahasa Indonesia, khususnya terkait aspek nada dan suasana. Dengan mengacu pada parameter kualitas penerjemahan Nababan et al. (2012) mengenai konsistensi dan teori Gottlieb (1992) tentang kendala pembuatan takarir, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikasikan nada menggunakan teori McKee (1997) serta suasana menggunakan kerangka kerja Ulutas & Aytas, (2024) dalam dialog asli berdasarkan penokohan dan pengembangan alur cerita; memeriksa konsistensi penerjemahannya ke dalam bahasa Indonesia; serta menganalisis dampak ketidakkonsistenan tersebut terhadap penokohan dan pengembangan alur cerita. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan menjadikan film 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) sebagai objek penelitian. Data dikumpulkan melalui teknik studi dokumentasi, dan hasil analisis disajikan dalam bentuk deskripsi naratif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya 26 data ketidakkonsistenan penerjemahan. Sebagian besar ketidakkonsistenan nada dan suasana ditemukan dalam kategori nada mengejek dan suasana khas remaja yang Jenaka, masing-masing sebanyak 4 data, sementara 2 data diklasifikasikan sebagai ketidakkonsistenan minor karena hanya menyebabkan pergeseran makna yang kecil. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa ketidakkonsistenan penerjemahan takarir didominasi oleh penggunaan teknik penerjemahan kata-demi-kata dan teknik penghilangan kata. Hal ini dipengaruhi oleh kendala teknis pembuatan takarir serta kurangnya penelitian mendalam dan eksplorasi yang kurang optimal terhadap budaya bahasa sasaran. Kondisi tersebut berdampak signifikan terhadap pergeseran nada dan suasana asli film tersebut.
