Abstract

This study investigated the partial and simultaneous correlation of movie clip exposure (X₁) and subtitle awareness (X₂) on the English pronunciation skills (Y) of seventh-grade students. Employing a quantitative correlational design with multiple linear regression, this research involved 27 seventh-grade students at Junior High Schools in the Bandung area, selected through total sampling. Data for the independent variables were collected using validated Likert-scale questionnaires, while pronunciation skills were assessed via a reading aloud task. To ensure high objectivity, the pronunciation assessment utilized a binary scoring system (Hit or Miss) covering accuracy of target sounds, word stress, and intonation, which was rigorously cross-validated using Praat acoustic analysis software. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 27. The hypothesis testing revealed three main findings: (1) there was no significant partial correlation between movie clip exposure and students’ pronunciation skills (t = 0.607, p = 0.549 > 0.05); (2) there was a significant partial correlation between subtitle awareness and pronunciation skills (t = 2.204, p = 0.037 < 0.05); and (3) there was a significant simultaneous correlation between both independent variables on pronunciation skills (F = 4.953, p = 0.016 < 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R²) indicated that both predictors collectively contributed 29.2% to the variance in pronunciation proficiency. The study concludes that mere visual-auditory exposure to movies is insufficient for phonological acquisition; learners strictly require the cognitive scaffolding provided by subtitle awareness to effectively map English sounds to their correct spellings.
