Abstract
The application of language especially English is applied in various interest such as mass media. In this modern era, mass media can be either printed or digital; likes newspapers which can be accessed by using smartphone. Newspaper has many different characteristics of language which are not common in daily life, especially in different field such sports. The most common terms that found in sports articles are in the format of compound words. Compound word is formed from a combination of two or more word as a single unit of meaning. This study aims to analyze the morphological process of compound words and find the classification of compound words on sports articles in New York Times online version. The analysis on this research uses the theories of McCarthy and Carstairs (2002) to analyze the morphological process of compound words, and the theories of Delahunty and Garvey (2010) and Fabb (2001) to find the classification of compounds. The researcher uses qualitative method with descriptive approach in writing this research. The data in this research is written text in the form of compound words that found in sports articles in the online version of the New York Times. In this research, the researcher found 35 data of compound nouns, 7 data of compound verbs, and 9 data of compound adjectives. Beside it, the researcher found 29 data that belong to endocentric compound and 21 data that belong to exocentric compound. The most common type of compound words in this research is compound noun with pattern N+N.
