Abstract

In a movie, the directors or playwriters are free to express their imagination to make a representation in their works. But, the representation have to be in line with the plot made by the playwriter. When time goes by, the representation, especially the woman representation, has a significant alteration in the characteristics case. The woman representation begins to have an important role in a story. This research aims to discuss about the woman representation in Miss Congeniality movie script by Donald Petrie and will be compared with Charlie’s Angels movie script by McG. This research focuses on 2 things, which are: (1) what the woman characteristics that appear as the woman representation in both of movies are, and (2) the differences of characteristics as the woman representation in both of movies. Also, this research concerns those 2 things with the feminism theories. This research is designed as literary criticism and conducted in a comparative literature study as the qualitative method. The research data consist of 51 dialogues and narrations as the corpus. The research does use the representation theory by A.B Dickerson and some supporting theories such thing as the feminism theories by Alwood, Fakih, Wolltenscraft, Taga and Metzner. This research shows there are 4 categories of women charateristics as the woman representation that usually appear in both of movies. The categories are: (1) beauty (8 data), (2) intelligence (12 data), (3) power and courage (14 data), (4) successful in social life and equality with men (10 data). Also, there are 2 different characteristics that clearly seen from the woman representation in those movies which are: (1) Feminine character, and (2) Masculine character. In Miss Congeniality movie, the main-woman character depicts as masculine person, but in Charlie Angels movie, the main-woman characters depict as feminine chain-gang. The results show that the woman representation has different characteristics accordance with the directors or playwriters’imagination and the most data of woman characteristics are included to the power and courage category. This woman representation can appear in the narrations as well as in the dialogues between the characters in the movies.
