Abstract

Popular literature consists of several types, some of which are essays and some are in the form of fiction. In popular fiction has formulas or genres. The main formulas include romance, adventure, and mystery. The one of formula in popular fiction that is gothic, gothic is a subgenre of popular fiction. This study discusses the elements in the gothic romance formula contained in Twilight novels by Stephenie Meyer, including Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. These elements include character, plot, setting and atmosphere. The researcher has chosen this novel because it is a best seller novel, and until now it is still the choice of the readers who like the gothic romance genre novel. In this study there are two core problems, namely: 1) What the elements of gothic romance are found in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga Novels. 2) How do those build gothic romance in novels by Stephenie Meyer? This research uses Cawelti's theory (1976) and is reinforced by Adi’s (2008) in categorizing the elements of gothic romance in the novel Twilight Saga. To analyze the data the researcher has used a qualitative descriptive method, which has explored and described the contents of the story in the novel Twilight Saga. The application of this method of qualitative research means that the data is in the generated in the form of words or sentences in the form of quotations. This method leads the researcher to identified, categorized, interpreted and conclude the research data descriptively. The results of this study; There are four intrinsic elements of gothic romance, namely character, plot, setting and atmosphere. While the characters and plots that build the element of gothic romance are two protagonists Bella and Edward who become heroes in fighting for their love.
