Abstract

In this study, the researcher selects theory of tree diagrams to analyze syntactic pattern since this theory enables to see at a glance the hierarchical structure and parts of sentences. Holy Qur’an is the glorious book which becomes the central religious text of Islam. It consists of 114 surah in different lengths. Surah Al-Qiyamah is one of surah in the Qur’an which has 40 verses. The researcher selects Surah Al-Qiyamah as the subject of this study since most of the verses of this surah are simple sentences. The researcher uses the English translation of Surah Al-Qiyamah by Mufti Taqi Usmani because his translation is more simple and understandable. Therefore, the researcher is interested in studying the research entitled A Syntactic Analysis on the English Translation of Surah Al-Qiyamah Using Theory of Tree Diagrams. This research is viewed as descriptive method because it analyzes the data descriptively based on Theory of Tree Diagrams. In addition, the data of this study are in the form of sentences or words rather than numbers. The data source of this study is the English translation of Surah Al-Qiyamah. It is taken from Usmani’s translation book entitled “Al Qur’an English Translation”. Based on the finding of this research, the researcher concludes that the syntactic patterns of Surah Al-Qiyamah using theory of tree diagrams, as follows: a) there are eighteen syntactic patterns of sentences. b) The patterns of noun phrases appear in eleven options. c) The patterns of verb phrases appear in fourteen options. d) The patterns of prepositional phrases appear in seven options. e) The pattern of adverb phrase appears in three options. f) The patterns of adjective phrase appears in two options.
