Abstract
Speaking for EFL is considered as a complicated activity that requires more courage to begin with. Moreover, students often have low participation even nothing to say in speaking class due to speaking anxiety and lack of personal motivation Lack of personal motivation is a serious problem that should be stimulated verbally and non-verbally to increase their self-confidence. Therefore, British Parliamentary debating system is conducted to solve student’s problem regarding to the verbal adjudication that consist of an explicit feedback in order to stimulate their self-confidence. This paper is written to achieve the objectives: 1) to describe the implementation of British Parliamentary Debating System, 2) To find out student’s self-confidence in EFL speaking class before and after debating class, and 3) to know student’s response to the practice of British Parliamentary Debating System. This research is qualitative research, particularly a case study. This research was conducted to the member of al-Ihsan Speaking Agency, an English club as a part of extracurricular activity in al-Ihsan Islamic boarding school, Baleendah, Bandung. The research data were collected from observation, questionnaire and interview. The researcher described the data through discussion and interpretation. The finding shows that the implementation of British Parliamentary is delivered well base on Quinn (2005). Moreover, British Parliamentary debating system influence student’s self-confidence due to the feedback that is delivered at verbal adjudication. In term of response, the result shows that the participants have good responses to the implementation of BPDS. However, a formal situation of debating activity has no more impact for student’s speaking anxiety. In conclusion, the implementation of British Parliamentary Debating system influence student’s self-confidence in EFL speaking class. Then it was recommended that the next researcher who is interested in exploring self-confidence in speaking to give more feedback in debate activity in order to reduce student’s anxiety and build their confidence.
