Abstract

In reading a novel, reader in general, says that an interesting novel can give a deep impression through a story or a uniqueness of a character and characterization with which setting supports them. Besides, an interesting one can arouse their adrenalin, so that they want to know more and more an end of a story. A most appealing novel is it can offer an invaluable meaning and make a reader faces a reality wisely. A novel can be fictions of events as if it is real. In this case, part of novels probably have tendency how to please a reader without giving more intention of an esthetic and an ethic value in it. Nevertheless, the part is means of inspiration of an author in conveying ideas or notions that represent propose and hope of a character to a reader. Appropriateness of grading a novel, whether it can be categorized high literature or not, it depends on a reader grades and acquires a precious thing of it. Because a novel is not only as a creation of imagination, but also as an imagination that creation of creativity makes a novel as means of conveying a theme and moral message. Theme of novel presents a valuable meaning for a reader. Because novel is literary work, so a presentation of it is supported by several elements that of those have causality, unity and connectivity. Therefore, in this paper, this analysis analyzes a plot, a character and a characterization as well as a setting that function as supporting elements in conveying a theme. Nurgiyantoro says that a plot is presentation in linear about many things in a novel that has relation with a character and a characterization. In a result, a plot can determine a comprehension of a theme. It is clear, a relation among a plot, a character, a characterization, and a theme in which a character functions as a conveyer of ideas through a dialog, a frame of thought, an action and a reaction between a main character with another characters, and a main character toward certain events. Besides, a setting can affect a frame of thought of a character in the face of a conflict. It is appropriate with the statement values that an interpretation of a theme must correspond with each of detail of a story. In analyzing the novel, this analysis uses descriptive analysis method in which data of the novel is described and then to be analyzed. These data is a support and creation of the theme in the novel. In Silent Honor, this analysis views that the novel contains the theme of honor in a Japanese girl, Hiroko. She feels that her right is oppressed, her existence in the USA is viewed as a second-class, and even when the war happens, she is urged as enemy. In this situation, she endeavors to get up to become a woman of having willpower, an independent woman and she does not give up easily. Besides, she is eager to study everything that can make development herself to be useful one for her and the other.
