Abstract

ENGLISH The interference can occur to everyone in bilingual or multilingual, because every region has a characteristic in each other which cannot be separated from them. This research focuses on the phonological interference of Thai students’ English reading and the caused factors of phonological interference. The interference occurs in pronouncing some articles of their reading. The interesting analysis of this research is an accent of Thai students’ and the absences English phonemes in Thai’s. The researcher uses Weinreich’s theory about interference that refers to the phonological interference as the produce of the speaker’s manner in reproducing the sound of language. The theory indicates to the bilingual who has an influence language in speaking English. The researcher conducts this research by using a qualitative approach. The researcher interviews Thai students and asking them to read some English articles while recording them when they read it. After interviewing them, the researcher listens to the recording file of Thai pronunciation and writes the strange words uttered by them to be analyzed. The researcher finds six consonants, four vowels and two diphthongs which different from English pronunciation. The factor of causing this interference is found from Thai Phonemes. It is because of the absences English phonemes in their phonemes structure which makes them pronounce English word in divergent pronunciation. This case also occurs to the accent they have. The influence of their accent is strong because commonly Thai people speak English with the long pronunciation that indicates to their accent. It can be concluded that phonological interference can occor in anykind factor. One of it is the absence of English phoneme in the other language phonemes. INDONESIA Interferensi bisa saja terjadi pada setiap orang yang berbicara dua bahasa atau berbagai bahasa. Hal ini dikarenakan setiap daerah mempunyai karakteristik bahasa masing-masing yang tak luput dari mereka. Penelitian ini fokus pada interferensi fonologi pada mahasiswa Thailand dalam pengucapan bahasa inggris dan factor-faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya interferensi fonologi. Interferensi ini terjadi dalam sebuah pengucapan beberapa artikel yang dibacakan oleh mereka. Analisis yang menarik dari penelitian ini adalah dialek Thailand yang tercampur dalam pelafalan bahasa inggris mereka dan tidak adanya fonem inggris dalam fonem Thailand. Peneliti menggunakan teori Weinreich tentang interference yang menunjukkan pada interferensi fonologi sebagai hasil dari cara berbicara si pembicara dalam menghasilkan suara suatu bahasa. Teori ini merujuk pada seorang yang berbicara dua bahasa yang terpengaruh dengan bahasa ibu dalam berbicara bahasa inggris. Peneliti melakukan penelitian ini melalui pendekatan kualitatif. Peneliti mewawancarai beberapa mahasiswa Thailand dan meminta mereka untuk membacakan artikel inggris sambil merekam apa yang mereka bacakan. Setelah mewawancarai mereka, peneliti mendengarkan dan menganalisa apa yang telah dibacakan oleh mahasiswa Thailand tersebut dan menuliskan apa saja kata-kata yang berbeda dari pelafalan bahasa inggris. Peneliti menemukan enam konsonan, empat vocal dan dua diptong yang berbeda dari pelafalan bahasa Inggris. Factor penyebab interferensi ditemukan dari fonem Thailand. Hal ini dikarenakan tidak adanya fonem inggris dalam fonem Thailand. Kasus ini juga terjadi pada dialek yang mereka punya. Pengaruh dari dialek mereka sangatlah kuat karena biasanya orang Thailand mengucapkan bahasa Inggris dengan pengucapan yang panjang. Hal ini dapat disimpulkan bawasanya interferensi fonologi bias terjadi pada factor apa saja. Salah satunya adalah ketiadaan foonem bahasa inggris di foneme bahasa lain.
