Abstract
Metaphor is one of figurative languages that is not only used in daily life but also in literary works such as poem. Therefore, the researcher is interested in discussing the mentioned topic with the objective of the research:1) to find out what types of metaphor, 2) what are the meanings of those metaphors in Emily Dickinson’s poems. The theories used in this research by Lakoff and Jhonson. Based on the theory, the metaphors are divided into three types; there are a structural metaphor, ontological metaphor, and orientational metaphor. Meanwhile, the object of this research is Emily Dickinson’s Poems. The method used in this research is Literary Criticism method. The results of the research shows that elements of metaphors are (37 data): There are (9 data) contains structural metaphor, (24 data) that contains ontological metaphor, and (4 data) that contains orientational metaphor. Meanwhile, the second problem about the meaning in Emily Dickinson’s poems are shows that condition of life, love, sadness, and death. Therefore, the meanings of each poem are various, every word is transferred from abstract to concrete meaning and each poem refers to a certain object of target and source. It can be concluded of the research in Emily Dickinson’s poems is known that all data is presented in the form of which shows the existence of a metaphor that clearly conveyed by the author.
