Abstract
There is an assumption that native teacher is better than non- native teacher in teaching speaking. This can mislead the quality of teacher. Basically, every teacher is unique since they have their own strategy to teach speaking, such as by: comparing and contrast the picture, storytelling, describing picture, role play, and oral presentation. In implementing the teaching speaking strategies, each teacher will be different in implementing the strategies, and each teacher may face the problems, those are: the use of mother tongue, the unconducive classroom condition, students’ lack of motivation, and the uninterested material of teaching speaking. Therefore this research intended to compare the strategies in teaching speaking that are used by the teachers. The research is aimed at enlightening (1) the strategies that the teachers use to teach speaking skill, (2) finding out the problem that the teachers encounter in the teaching of speaking, and (3) knowing the solution’s of the problem that teachers face in the teaching of speaking. The goal of this research is to compare the strategies of teaching speaking skill between native and non- native teacher. The research adapted the comparative qualitative research design to explain the phenomenon. The research was carried out at SMA Taruna Bakti Bandung. The respondents of this research were a Native English Teacher and Non- Native English Teacher. To collect the data, interview and field note taking were employed. The interview involves a native English Speaking Teacher and a non- native English Speaking Teacher. Based on the analyzing data, it is clear that the teachers have some difficulties in teaching speaking. The following findings emerge: (1) the strategies used by native teacher are focus on classroom speaking activities, such as: comparing and contrasts the picture, describing picture, and oral presentation. While the strategies used by Non- native Teacher were making fable and role play (2) the problems that the native teacher encounter in the teaching of speaking, such as: the use of mother of tongue and unconducive classroom. While the problems that the Non- native teacher encounters in the teaching of speaking, such as: unconducive classroom, students have lack of motivation of learning speaking, and uninterested material. (3) The solutions given by native teacher in facing the teaching speaking problems was reminding students not to worry about making mistakes and giving the students clear instructions and sufficient guidance, while The solutions given by Non- native teacher in facing the teaching speaking problems stimulating students’ motivation and interests in learning speaking by giving icebreaking in the pre learning activities, which correlate to the students’ life. Referring to the result, it can be seen that the strategies used by teachers are various. It is suggested to the teacher to implement the strategies that can increase students’ speaking ability.
