Abstract

In X&Y album Coldplay, the researcher assumed that the song lyrics on this album have a lot of Islamic symbols, therefore the researcher wanted to know what symbols of Islam are contained in the song lyrics of X&Y album Coldplay and how Interpretans symbols of Islam are contained in lyrics of X&Y album Coldplay. It used a semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Peirce analyzing sign interpreted to be a symbol in literature. Descriptive qualitative method was employed by the researcher to find out the results of the research. The data come from the song’s lyrics in the album X&Y Coldplay's work which shows the symbol of the Islamic teaching. Based on the analysis of the symbols associated with the religion of Islam in the lyrics of songs by Coldplay, the researcher found that of 13 title of songs by Coldplay in the album X&Y, there are 13 symbols, consisting of guidance symbol which is easily found in the lyrics of “Square One”, “Fix You”, “Twisted Logic”, and “White shadows”; assistance symbol in lyric of “Talk”, and “The Hardest of Part”; miracle symbol in lyric of “Speed of Sound”; hard hearted symbol in lyric of “A Message”; hypocrite symbol in lyric of “Low”; honesty symbol in lyric of “The Slawlowed in The Sea”; heaven symbol in lyric of “Till Kingdom Come”; sin symbol in lyric of “X&Y”; and opportunity symbol found in lyric of “What If”. The researcher also found a interpretant between symbols in the Coldplay song’s lyrics on the album X & Y with the Islamic teaching. The interpretant of symbol in the lyrics with the Islamic teachings of Islam is derived from the symbols and stories in every song that has a representative with the teachings of Islam which are derived from the holy book, Qur'an. There are some verses in the Qur'an which also explains manual for human life that God has given aid, miracle evidence of God, human hard hearted, God's promise of paradise kingdom.
