Abstract

ENGLISH : The femininity is a term which shows women from some points of view. It creates two definitions: (1) woman who wants to show her independence and (2) the image of beauty woman based on man’s orientation. Therefore, the study of femininity could give deep observation in women’s study. It is also can be applied in literary work. Based on the reason, Charlotte Brontë’s The Professor is chosen for the research. The study of femininity nuance in The Professor is based on four models that proposed by Elaine Showalter called as gynocriticism. Gynocriticism embraces the femininity through women’s writing through four models: women’s body, women’s language, women’s psyche, and women’s culture. The purpose of this research is to find out and understand the femininity nuance’s description through women’s body, language, psyche, and culture in The Professor. It uses three approaches: mimetic, expressive, and objective. Thus, this research used a qualitative descriptive method which describing scientific logic data without number, amount, or percentage to be easily understood and concluded. The result shows that The Professor contains four models. In women’s body, the researcher finds some points explained such as the description woman’s picture including the meaning in it perfectly through the man’s first sight. In women’s language, the researcher finds many women’s own figurative languages caused by the unique diction. In women’s psyche, the researcher is able to find the relation between Brontë’s characteristic which is reflected by Crimsworth. In women’s culture, the researcher finds the condition of women in Victorian period which is still controlled by patriarchal system. For instance, there is an ironical condition between Brontë’s writing and her own life. The conclusion of the research shows that The Professor contains femininity nuance through those four models. In the other hand, the study femininity can be analysed through Showalter’s four models INDONESIA : Keperempuanan merupakan sebuah istilah menunjukkan perempuan dari berbagi sudut pandang. Keperempuanan melahirkan dua definisi: (1) perempuan yang menujukkan jati dirinya dan (2) penggambaran keindahan perempuan berdasarakan orientasi laki-laki. Oleh karena itu, studi keperempuanan mampu melahirkan observasi yang mendalam megenai studi perempuan. Hal ini juga bisa diaplikasikan dalam karya sastra. Dalam hal ini, novel yang berjudul The Professor karya Charlotte Brontë dipilih sebagai bahan penelitian. Studi mengenai nuansa keperempuanan dalam novel The Professor didasari oleh teori empat model yang dikemukakan oleh Elaine Showalter bernama gynocriticism. Teori ini mencakup nuansa keperempuanan pada tulisan perempuan melalui empat aspek: tubuh perempuan, bahasa perempuan, kejiwaan perempuan, dan budaya perempuan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan serta memahami nuansa keperempuanan dalam novel The Professor melalui tubuh perempuan, bahasa perempuan, kejiwaan perempuan, dan budaya perempuan. Penelitian ini menggunakan tiga pendekatan: mimesis, ekspresif, dan objektif. Kemudian, penelitian ini menggunakan metode qualitatif deskriptif dengan mengemukakan data secara logis tanpa nomor, penjumlahan, atau presentase untuk bisa dipahami dan disimpulkan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa novel The Professor mengandung empat model yang telah disebutkan. Dalam poin tubuh perempuan, peneliti menemukan penggamabaran menyeluruh pada lukisan seorang perempuan dari sudut pandang seorang laki-laki walau hanya selintas. Dalam poin bahasa perempuan, peneliti menemukan bahasa figuratif khas perempuan yang dimunculkan melalui berbagai diksi yang unik. Dalam poin kejiwaan perempuan, peneliti menemukan karakteristik Brontë yang terefleksikan oleh karakter Crimsworth. Dalam poin budaya perempuan., peneliti menemukan kondisi perempuan pada masa Victoria yang masih dikontrol oleh sistem patriarki. Sebagai contoh, terdapat kondisi yang ironis antara isi tulisan Brontë dengan hidupnya sendiri. Kesimpulan dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa novel The Professor mengandung nuansa keperempuanan melalui empat model tersebut. Dengan kata lain, studi keperempuanan bias dianalisis melalui empat model Showalter
