Abstract

This paper describes the organic unity of the text in The Wall album by Pink Floyd. This study helps the researcher to acquire the meaning by analyzing the organic unity of the text presented in lyrics. The researcher might not acquire the problems so clearly or so totally without New Criticism theory. New Criticism theory is also the appropriate concept to analyze the problems in this research. The focal focuses of this research are, 1) the organic unity of the text presented in the lyrics, and 2) the influence of the organic unity of the text to the context and meaning of the lyrics. The data are taken from the book entitled Pink Floyd: Anthology (Songbook) and those data are analyzed through descriptive method. In analyzing the data, the researcher is describing the lyrics-based on the questions of the research. In the first question of the research, the researcher describes the lyrics using New Criticism to find out the organic unity of the text presented in the lyrics. In the second question of the research, the researcher describes the lyrics using New Criticism to find out the influence of the organic unity of the text to the meaning and the context of the lyrics. The results of this analysis show how the organic unity of the text in the lyrics build up and influence the meaning and the context of it. New Criticism valuates that the good literary text is the literary text which has the organic unity structured. There are four devices of language of the organic unity which should be describe; ambiguity, paradox, irony, and tension. The lyrics also show how the organic unity influences the meaning and the context of the lyrics. The researcher sees that the organic unity helps the researcher in comprehends the meaning and the context in each lyric, but even the whole lyrics. By applying New Criticism on this research, the researcher obtains to appreciate the literary text and to see how the formal elements of languages could build up and influence the meaning and the context of the lyric.
