Abstract

This research mainly explores about gender identity dilemma and transsexual from Einar character in The Danish Girl movie script. Gender is contrary to sex, ‘gender’ has social, cultural and psychological rather than biological connotations. It is defined in terms of femininity and masculinity, Einar is a man who have more femininity than masculinity, and in the end he changes his primary sex to the second sex (man into woman). This research focused on two points: (1) To find out about Einar character in relation to his gender identity dilemma. (2) To find out second about how Einar determined his gender to solve his dilemma. Having collected data, this reaserch analyze by ways of identifying, interpreting, describing, and evaluating. To analyze this point, this research use the theory of Gender Identity by Pilcher and Whelehan (2004) and Transsexual by Benjamin (1999). This research put scripts from movie script The Danish Girl, then took dialogues and narrations that showed Einar dilemma. The results of this research explained how gender identity dilemma in Einar character. After analyzing the data, there are two conclusions. Firstly, Einar is described as a man who has a feminine tendency; submissive, inferior, and emotional. Secondly, there is a solution to find his identity. In transsexual, this solution is called genital surgery.
