Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the forms of indirect speech act and kinds of declarative, imperative, and interrogative indirect speech act of Miguel’s utterance in the Coco Movie. There are three forms of indirect speech: Declarative, Imperative, and Interrogative. The data of this research were taken from the utterance of Miguel character containing Indirect speech act. The writer uses speech act theory by Austin and includes several theories that support the research. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method by using technique of collecting data that are searching for films through Google, and downloading them with English subtitles, and searching the data that can be analyzed according to research. Then uses a technique of data analysis that related to research and describe data relating to linguistic theory. Therefore, this research the writer found and analyzed 40 data of indirect speech act and kinds of declarative, imperative, and interrogative indirect speech act which were used by Miguel’s utterance in the Coco Movie. There are 6 data of declarative, 28 data of imperative, and 6 data of interrogative. The reason indirect speech act imperative is more dominantly because he is the main character who often appears in the scene and has many expressions, especially he is different from his family. He really likes music and his family is very opposed to him being a musician, but Miguel did not give up to reach his dream so he often used speech requests which included in the indirect speech act imperative.
