Abstract

Translation shift is some changes in a translation process to make the source language (SL) has the equivalence in the target language (TL). It occurs to make readers be able to accept and understand written texts in the source language after being translated into target one. In this case, Boule de Suif written by Guy de Maupassant is one of the belleslettres that has been translated into English and other languages including Sundanese. Therefore, this research aims to find out: (1) the processes of Level Shift Translation and (2) the processes of Category Shift Translation of Boule de Suif by Guy de Maupassant in English into Sundanese version. This research uses a descriptive method by analyzing document. The theories used to analyze the data are from Catford (1965) as the main theory and other related theories as the supporting one. The findings of data analysis show that the process of level shift is dominated by the shifting of the use of grammar to lexis from source language to the target language while the process of category shift is dominated by unit shift that occurs from word to phrase or vice versa. Based on the findings of data analysis, it can be drawn conclusion that the process of level shift and category shift as two kinds of translation shift are almost used in each paragraph of the novellete. It proves that the process of translation shifts can not be avoided from the translator’s mind because the process flows naturally along with the translator’s comprehension of the text in the source language (SL), but the source text (ST) still has the equivalence in the target text (TT) so the message from the novellete can be received by readers in the target language (TL).
