Abstract
Idiom is a group of words which has different meaning when it takes as unity and if it takes individually it will have another meaning. It means that the idiom is different from the individual words when they stay alone. Therefore, the researcher is interested in conducting the research dealing with idiom. The research is aimed at categorizing forms idiomatic expressions found in Great Gatsby’s Novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald and getting the meaning of idiomatic expressions understood in Great Gatsby’s Novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. To advocate this research, the researcher used Fernando’s Theory (1996) to explain the forms of idioms, such as pure idiom, semi idiom and literal idiom. Then, get the meaning of idiom use lexical and grammatical meaning. This research used qualitative method since the method provides a wide descriptive of process that happens in the area which is analyzed. The data in this research were taken from Great Gatsby’s Novel. The results showed that there were 68 (sixty eight) words of idiomatic expression, consisting of: 8 (eight) words categorized into pure idiom, 20 (twenty) words categorized into semi idiom, and 40 (forty) words categorized into literal idiom. It means that literal idiom dominate in this novel than semi and pure idiom, thus do not really hard to understand the novel because literal idiom often to find in daily dialogue and written generally. In relation to the meanings of idiom in Great Gatsby’s Novel, pure idioms and semi idioms cannot be meant by word for word because they mean something different when staying alone. But, it is different from those of literal idioms, which can be easily meant as the meaning can be found from words of idiom themselves.
