Abstract

ENGLISH: This research analyzed the local color and realism in John Steinbeck's The Pearl. Local color and realism focus on the particular characteristics of a region and people at a particular place. In this research have two statement of problems there are 1) what are the aspects of local color in The Pearl novel? and 2) How does the local color reveal the characteristic of realism?. The Pearl is realist fiction tells about the American-Mexican daily life. In this research, the researcher uses the theory aspects of local color according to Abram's theory (1999) there is a detailed representation in the process of fiction of the setting, dialect, custom, dress, the way of thinking and feeling which are distinctive of a particular region. The researcher also linked the theory of realism by Current-Gratia (1964) about the characteristic of realism. This research designed as a literary criticism and using mimetic approach. The researcher found several data, first, there are settings of particular place, historical time and social circumstance. The setting takes place in La Paz, California Baja Sur, at that time La Paz was being colonized by Spain and the social conditions between native Mexican-American people living in poverty and European people living prosperously. Second, dialect that character uses the religion dialect. Third, the custom that found in the novel are found by the behavior of the character, religion, kinds of foods and their habitual eating and hereditary traditions. Fourth, the aspect of the dress that the native people and European people’s clothing. The last is the way of thinking and feeling, the researcher merges into the aspect of the character. The character showed some locality of native people and the European people. Characteristic realism that reveal in the novel through the characters describes as an ordinary people, setting at the original places and plausible plot. Based on the result of the research can be concluded as follows: Firstly, data of the aspects of local color setting (9), dialect (1), custom (10), dress (6) and the way of thinking and feeling (11). Secondly, data characteristics of realism that showed through the character (15), setting (6) and plot (7). All of the elements of local color in the novels flourish the sense of locality based on the story and background. Then, the local color as a subset of realism represent the reality into the fiction. INDONESIA: Penelitian ini menganalisis warna lokal dan realisme The Pearl karya John Steinbeck. Warna lokal dan realisme fokus pada karakteristik khusus suatu wilayah dan orang-orang di tempat tertentu. Peneliti memiliki dua pertanyaan penelitian yaitu 1) apa sajakah aspek warna lokal dalam novel The Pearl? Dan 2) bagaimana warna lokal menggambarkan karakteristik realis fiksi?. The Pearl novel adalah sebuah realis fiksi yang menggambarkan kehidupan orang American-Mexican. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan teori aspek warna lokal menurut Abram (1999) yaitu representasi rinci dalam realis fiksi yaitu setting, dialek, kebiasaan, pakaian, cara berpikir dan merasakan yang khas dari daerah tertentu. Peneliti menggunakan teori Current-Gratia (1964) tentang karakteristik realis fiksi. Kemudian penelitian ini didesign sebagai kritik sastra yang menggunakan pendekatan mimetik. Peneliti menemukan data yaitu pertama, latar tempat berlangsung di La Paz, California Baja Sur, latar waktu dalam novel pada saat itu La Paz dijajah oleh Spanyol, keadaan sosial antara penduduk asli Meksiko-Amerika yang hidup dalam kemiskinan dan orang-orang Eropa yang hidup makmur. Kedua, dialek yang digunakan karakter adalah bahasa lama dan dialek agama. Ketiga, kebiasaan yang ditemukan dalam novel yang ditemukan oleh perilaku karakter, agama, jenis makanan dan kebiasaan makan mereka serta tradisi turun-temurun. Keempat, aspek berpakaian yang dikenakan orang lokal Meksiko-Amerika dan orang Eropa. Yang terakhir adalah cara berpikir dan merasakan, . Karakter menunjukkan beberapa perbedaan antara lokalitas penduduk asli dan orang-orang Eropa. Karakteristik realism yang ditunjukan dengan karakter yang merupakan orang biasa, latar tempat yang asli dan plot yang masuk akal. Berdasarkan hasil dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan sebagai berikut: Pertama, data aspek warna lokal latar (9), dialek (1), kebiasaan (10), cara berpakaian (6), cara berfikir dan merasakan (11). Kedua, data karakteristik dalam realism yang ditunjukan oleh karakter (15), latar (6), dan plot (7). Semua elemen warna lokal dalam novel mengembangkan rasa lokalitas berdasarkan cerita dan latar belakang. Warna lokal merupakan subset pada realisme yang merepresentasikan kehidupan nyata kedalam fiksi.
