Abstract
Undergraduate Thesis,English Studies, faculty Adab and Humanities department, Sunan Gunung Djati Stat Islamic Univesity Bandung. Supervisor: 1. Dr. Pepi Siti Paturohmah, S.S.,M.Pd. 2. Dian Nurrachman, S.S., M. Pd.This research is titled, The Depression Experienced By Rachel Watson As The Main Character in Paula Hawkin’s novel The Girl on the Train. The purpose of this research is to identify, analyze and describe the forms of depression, depression factors and analyze the effects of depression which are illustrated through Rachel Watson as the main character in Paula Hawkins's novel The Girl on the Train. The researcher based his research on the theories of Corri, Santrock and Kaplan. There are four methods of literary criticism that researchers used in this research, namely, mimetic, declare that the literary (art), pragmatic, and expressive. The method of literary criticism taken is an objective approach. What is discussed or analyzed in this research is the theory that supports in analyzing depression problems experienced by Rachel Watson in the novel The Girl on The Train. Therefore the researcher used the theory of psychoanalysis in this study. Data is taken from the novel The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. The results of this study the researcher have found that forms of depression are experienced by Rachel Watson in the novel The Girl on The Train, namely dysthymic, psychotic depression, and bipolar disorder. There are two types of factors that cause depression of Rachel Watson, namely physical factors and psychological factors. Physical factors include gender, lifestyle, and alcoholism. And psychological factors include personality, mindset, self-esteem, stress, and family environment. The effects caused by depression experienced by Rachel Watson in the novel The Girl on The Train, namely physical symptoms, Psychic Symptoms and social symptoms.
