Abstract

When reading literary works, writer found types of idioms. One of the drama books which has many idioms and their types is The Five People You Meet in Heaven written by Mitch Albom. The idioms are very difficult to be understood because idiom is a group of words with a special meaning which cannot be understood by taking the meanings of the words one at time. Based on the problem above, finally the writer decided to propose the tittle of the paper “An Analysis of Idioms in The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom.” In this research, there are two statements of problems: (1) What are the types of idiom in The Five People You Meet in Heaven? (2) What are the meanings of idiom in The Five People You Meet in Heaven? So that, the purpose of this research are: (1) To find the types of idiom in The Five People You Meet in Heaven. (2) To find out the meaning from the idiom phrase in The Five People You Meet in Heaven. In this research, the researcher uses qualitative method because qualitative method is the most suitable method in this research. In order to find the answers of those two discussions, the writer uses the theories that related to the study of idiom and meaning especially the theories that focus on types of idiom and meaning. Then, related to idiom theory, the writer uses Seidl and Mcmordie. Afterwards, the researcher uses the theory of meaning from Kridalaksana and Langlotz that connotative meaning is a group of word that is based on feeling or mind that appear or being appeared to the narrator (writer) and audience (reader). The result of finding and analysis shows that there are 53 kinds of idiom in the “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” novel. All of them are looked for according to the types of idiom and the classifications of idiom. Those idioms are also interpreted into their connotative meaning based on the context of sentence in the novel. In this case, to translate idioms are not only look for them by using dictionary but also see the context of sentence contained idioms. Furthermore, the meaning of idioms in the sentence cannot be translated word for word, because they mean something different from the individual words when they stand alone and the meaning of idioms depend on the context or sentence it. Therefore, the writer concludes that the research from “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” is that many idioms appear and it influences the comprehension of sentence. Finally, the writer suggest that the reader who studies of language to develop this research of idioms to be more interesting in the next discussion.
