Abstract

This thesis was aimed at showing how the construction in detective story linked to crime issue as represented in the Study in Scarlet and The Mysterious Affair at Styles novels. The Study In Scarlet novel was written by Arthur Conan Doyle and The Mysterious Affair at Styles was written by Agatha Christie.The both of the novels were studied by using the construction of detective story by J.K Van Dover. This research used the qualitative method. The problem of this research was about how the comparison of the construction in solving problem from the both of the detectives. The data present that the construction of detective story was linked to the how the detective characters solve the mystery case as represented in the both of the novels. The results of this study this are showing that mostly the detective story will have the same construction. As the Dover arguments towards the construction of the detective story in solving the problem which are divided into three phases such as the occurrence of the problem,the collecting of the clues which is divided into two methods, there are the detectives work with partner and the investigation to the crime scene. And the last construction is the announcement of the solution. This thesis consist of the comparison of the construction of solving the problem. There are the comparison of the occurrence of the problem, the collection of the clues and the announcement of the solution from the both of novels Study In Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle and The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie.
