Abstract
This research is focused on the symbols of Holy Grail in Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. This symbol is interpreted by other symbols to represent it certain meaning. Also this symbol become the main symbol in the novel and affects the story of the novel. The writer used Pierce’s Theory of Signs. This theory distinguishes sign into three elements; object, representament, and interpretant. The representament is the form which the sign takes. The object is something referred by representament. Interpretant is a sign in the mind of someone about the object as a result of representament and object and it can be an image or concept. This research applied library research and the compiled data were analyzed through descriptive method. This method tried to find, describe, explain and analyze symbols by using semiotics theory by Charles Sanders Pierce. For the semiotic analysis, the writer marked the data by choosing a literary work, Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code novel, then reading the text of novel intensely, and classifying the data that were containing the symbol, then categorizing that symbol, then, the classified data is described by the writer’s understanding of the two statements of problem and the writer’s understanding of the theory. At the last, all interpreted data are concluded based on the result of research The result of this research, the writer found the steps of Langdon and Sophie’s interpretation on Holy Grail. The Holy Grail firstly described by Sophie as the Jesus cup or vessel. Then, the further interpretations are the Holy Grail represents the Da Vinci’s arts which mean that Da Vinci knows about the truth of Holy Grail, represents the rose symbol which means that the Holy Grail is something feminist or womanhood, it also navigates to the truth. Then, the Holy Grail represents the Marie Magdalene as a Jesus Wife which means the true Holy Grail is about the Jesus bloodline, Jesus descendant. This interpretation process is found by using the Pierce’s Theory of Sign. The writer also found that this Holy Grail symbol affects the story line of the novel. There are many symbols in the novel and those symbols mostly direct to the one intention, the Holy Grail quest. Most symbol that affected by Holy Grail is Da Vinci codes, which is also become the title of the novel itself.
