Abstract
This research investigates the conversational implicature. The researcher formulateds this study into two questions: (1) What types of conversational implicature are found in Putra Nababan’s interview with Barack Obama? (2) How do the conversations violate the cooperative principles? This research used descriptive qualitative method to reveal the result of the study. The result of analysis showed that interviewees used both type of conversational implicature. Those were generalized and particularized conversational implicature. The researcher found 16 conversations in generalized conversational implicature and 4 conversations in particularized conversational implicature. It means that generalized conversational implicature was the most dominant type used in the interview. Generalized conversational implicature was dominant because the interviewees was often talking in general that was able to be understood by interviewer. Furthermore, interviewees also violated all of maxim / cooperative principles. The researcher found 8 violation maxim of quantity, 5 violation maxim of quantity and manner, 3 violation maxim of manner, 2 violation maxim of quantity and relevance, 1 violation maxim of quantity, relevance and manner and 1 violation maxim of quantity, manner and quality. It means that violation maxim of quantity was the most dominant used in the interview. Violation maxim of quantity was dominant because the interviewees often answered the question with more explanation than it was expected
