Abstract

Sympathy is the participation of feeling to the others' feelings and putting emotion in the context of the situation of others in a situation of happiness or mourning. In this research, the researcher examines whereby to comfort with condolences to victims of the disaster in Banten. The background of this research arises based on the attitude was practiced by Indonesians as citizens affected by disaster victims and foreigners that followed the disaster through the YouTube Channel. The theories used to support this research are theory of Leech’s sympathy maxim and Leech’s politeness scales (1983) as the theoretical basis for solving the problems above. In addition, the method used in this research is qualitative approach to reach the research finding. The source of data collected of 40 data, 20 data from BBC News and 20 data from tvOneNews comments about tsunami in Banten’s coastline 22 December 2018. There are 11 sympathy maxim data categorized as cost-benefit scales, 1 data categorized as optionally scale and 8 data categorized as indirectness scale that found in BBC News. Besides, the sympathy maxim that found in tvOneNews there are 9 data categorized as cost-benefit scale, 6 data categorized as optionally scale, and 5 data categorized as indirectness scale.
